In the build up to the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, we collaborated with British Cycling and Sophie Unwin to create a short documentary about her journey into the sport.
The project gives an insight into Sophie's early years in the sport, focusing on her initial rise into the Great British Cycling Team, in a 12 month period going from trial day having never been on a velodrome to becoming World Champion.
We spent 2 days in Manchester with a 4 man crew, filming with Sophie in a variety of locations.
We utilised a variety of production techniques, using Long Zoom lens to create moments of thought as the frame slowly trickled inwards, we utilised fast moving shots with quick cuts to juxtapose the slow zooms.
One of the most effective shots was the tracking shot in the velodrome. We attached a lightweight camera to an electric bike, which tracked along with Sophie and Jenny at high speed. We initially explored using a stabilised gimbal set up on the bike, however we choose a more gritty lock of shot, that would feel the rumble of track at the high speed, adding an extra level of feeling to the following shots.
Sophie and her pilot Jenny Holl went onto win 4 medals in 4 events at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games - 2x Golds, 1x Silver, 1x Bronze, - and now the journey continues!
